Complementary Therapy assisting Acute Terminal Illness & Respite Care Patients

As a complementary therapist I have worked at Compton hospice for 5 years with acute terminal illness and respite care patients. The main factor for the underlying "Dis-ease" is anger which has been unexpressed and turned in on ourselves.

Often this was even more problematic and complex as patients remembered past neglect and abuse issues whilst being treated for their terminal illness.

This happened so frequently, that I started logging these incidences.

It may be that the "dis-ease" causes patients to feel disempowered and this prompts memories of other times when they experienced feeling disempowered. Many of the treatments for terminal illness are invasive and dont respect the individuals dignity which adds fuel to the fire.

Some of the herbal remedies that assist in returning the body back to its vital homeostasis are co-enzyme Q10 at highest mg possible (100mg 3x daily), Siberian ginseng 1000mg 2 x daily, Gentle Vit C 10000mg can be taken every hour that the patient is awake as its water soluble so anything the body doesnt need will be urinated out.

For each individuals amounts/ combinations you can either muscle test or dowse to get this excatly right.

For treating MRSA which patients with compromised immunity systems are often prone to I used Tee tree and May Chang essential oils to cleanse the patients room it can be made up into a spray to use for airborne aid, as a spray to deodorise the patients room and can be used neat on door handles and equipment.

I also had a patient with a fungating lesion to the face and as the odour of the wound was problematic for him and his family. I would put a few drops onto the edges of the dressing and on tissue paper on radiators/window sills so that the antbiotic, antiseptic, anti viral and anti fungal properties could be breathed in by all visitors to the room and the tee tree actually stimulates the immunity system and the fragrance is a citrus smell, so a clean and fresh fragrance too.

The best advice for all patients with a terminal illness is to have complementary therapies - it doesnt really matter which the patient chooses as thse help the patient to relax and when we are relaxed our immunity system works at maximum potency.

I Wish You Enough !

Recently I overheard a Father and daughter in their last moments together at the airport.

They had announced the departure.

Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the Father said, 'I love you, and I wish you enough.'

The daughter replied, 'Dad, our life together has been more than enough.

Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Dad.'

They kissed and the daughter left.

The Father walked over to the window where I was seated.

Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry.

I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking,

'Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?'

'Yes, I have,' I replied.

'Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?'.

'I am old, and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral,' he said.

'When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough.' May I ask what that means?' He began to smile.

'That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.'

He paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and he smiled even more.

'When we said, 'I wish you enough,' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.'

Then turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory.

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright,
no matter how grey the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

He then began to cry and walked away.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them; but then an entire life to forget them.

Life's Tree-Mendous! : As featured in Take a Break's - Fate and Fortune magazine - April 2010

Some people love beautiful clothes, others like expensive wine.

Me? - Well, my passion's a bit barking.

You see i love trees. Yew, birch, oak .... you name them, i adore them.

It all started when i was four years old and my grandfather built me a tree house in his back garden. I spent hours playing up there.

And if i wasn't up a tree, i was learning all about them from Grandad. 'That's a palm tree, and there's an oak,' he would say, pointing out all the different types of tree as we walked round Ward End Park in Birmingham together.

Even my grandma, Agnes, was in on the act. She was always making poultices, trees and herbal remedies from trees and plants she'd grown in the garden.

Maybe that was at the back of my mind in 1998 when, after 25 years as a special needs teacher i decided to retrain as a complimentary therapist. I did massage, reiki, and aromatherapy, but it wasnt long before my love of trees began creeping into my work.

On a tree spirit healing course run by Sue and Simon Lilley, I learnt that each tree had it's own spirit and can be used for different types of healing. My heart beat a little faster when I heard those words. Tree spirit healing was right up my street. In fact you could say it made me feel tree-mendous!

Of course my husband, Terry, now 54, was sceptical when i told him i wanted to be a tree therapist. "Whats that involve?" he asked. I explained how you invoke the spirits of trees during healing sessions. "You also placetwigs, leaves and bark on troublesome areas of the body to help cure ailments," I said.

It might sound dappy to you, but Terry was used to my little ways.

Every time i'm feeling run-down i go and stand in a 1,000 year old yew tree in St Michael's Church near my home in Penkridge. The vicar is used to seeing me in there, recharging my batteries, so he doesn't bat an eyelid when i call hello from inside the trunk. My enthusiasm for trees is clearly infectious, as Terry decided to take a leaf out of my book and train as a holistic therapist, too. And in 1999 we opened our own alternative health centre - Heaven Scent Bliss.

People can come to be healed by trees. Some people might give me stick about what i do. But trees have profound healing propoerties. Just seeing woodland can have a relaxing effect on people uffering from stress. And, of course, willow bark is actually the basis of aspirin.

I practice what i preach as well. Terry and I have two sons, Matt, 31 and Richard, 30. Ever since he was little, Richard had suffered from Raynaud's Disease - a disorder that affects blood flow to his hands and feet when they're exposed to the cold. He'd been to the doctors to try and cure it, but nothing seemed to work. So i did some research and found that hawthorn could help him, as it conserves energy and increases the ability of the body to cope with stress. Sure enough, when i gave him some hawthorn essence and a piece of hawthorn to keep in his pocket, his symptoms improved.

Our doctor is so impressed by the transformations we've achieved he's started referring patients to us.

Now Terry and I just can't get enough of trees. For our last wedding anniversary we even stayed in a glammed-up tree house in Sussex. Some people may think that sounds too much like taking the office home, but we don't mind.

Once a tree fanatic, always a tree fanatic.

The Importance of Protection in Supporting Your Energy System

We have been complementary therapists since 1999 and are still as passionate and energetic as we were at the start of our career Unfortunately many of our fellow students and colleagues are no longer in practise and the reason for this is that they did not learn to protect themselves from others energies.

When your patient, family member, friend is distressed we liken it to them "drowning" if you get in the water with them you too will drown So the healthier option is to throw them a lifeline, a raft, a branch or a rope whilst you stay safe on the bank. TO do this you will still be as compassionate and empathetic as always but you will protect your energies form others grief, loss or anger issues as when you are absorbing others emotions it is difficult to discern which are you're own emotions and which are others which can be disconcerting to say the least!

We recommend that each morning as part of your daily cleansing routine you Imagine surrounding the whole of your physical body and aura in a strong bubble with a hard protective coating on it & fill it with the light of any colours that resonate with you, experiment with what feels best for you.
Or imagine putting on your armour which covers all of your body and aura.

One of our students imagines a pink lobster shell covering her entire being and aura and this works really well for her. - Be as imaginative as you can. My personal favourite (as I am an angel worker), is to ask Archangel Michael to protect me and to wrap his blue cloak of protection around me It feels divine and very comforting. You can also us Reiki, Sekhem or Rune symbols to protect you And yew tree leaves, twigs and Rosemary have been used for thousands of years as protectors!

In December 2009 we found the following Prayer for protection "I offer my heartfelt gratitude to the guides upstairs, and most especially to the members of my spiritual 'A' team. I request that they provide me with power, protection, and support as I engage in spiritual fieldwork. I also ask that my vibration be set on high allowing my travelling soul to journey into spiritual realms in complete safety while my physical body awaits my return surrounded by a perimeter of protection I offer my profound gratitude in advance.

Healing Erectile Dysfunction

I'm starting an MSc in September 2009, in Sexual and Spiritual Health and any input from other Kinesiologists would be most welcome. I have been getting clients presenting with: migraines, headaches, high blood pressure, digestive complaints and skeletal problems over the last 3 years on a fairly regular basis. After their initial session it has become apparent that the underlying cause for many of these symptoms, especially headaches and migraines are sexual problems of one kind or another.

There have often been issues of being rejected sexually by the person's partner, frequently this has been acute as well as chronic. This always has a huge emotional and psychological impact. It erodes the trust and intimacy in relationships as we are at our most vulnerable during love-making and this can eventually alienate the person to such a degree that the relationship breaks down and the couple part.

Again, frequently the trigger for erectile dysfunction has been acute stress were the man's body cannot adapt from these high levels of adrenalin to a relaxed and loving state. Men often find it difficult to talk about this, especially with their partner, as he feels a failure as a man. The less he talks about how he feels, the more he seeks his own counsel, which at this point is not positive in most cases. So, the pattern emerges often that in an attempt to be a good provider the man is working too hard and too long hours and that is his priority as the ''bread winner's. It means he has less time at home with his partner/ family. As he is not talking about what is going on with his ''internal chatter'' this produces physical and emotional blockages to a satisfying sexual relationship. Then the cycle of avoidance of sexual contact by either one simply makes the situation worse.

The key is to encourage both parties to talk honestly about what us happening within themselves. This works very well, providing both parties agree to co- operate and to talk openly and honestly. Often lots of emotional / psychological work will come up in the individual's sessions to address this issue once it has been spoken about - talking seems to be the most potent blockage-dissolver.
Through consistent use of herbal remedies and researching their effects it has become clear to me that Co Q1 0 is hugely beneficial for overcoming erectile dysfunction and it has such excellent effects on the heart too. It tends to be for these clients that Lamberts 120mg Co Q10 is the most effective as it is bio - available. Taking Siberian Ginseng for 2 weeks then Panax Ginseng for 2 weeks and alternating between these two is hugely effective and within 4 weeks usually clients are reporting great ' improvements. The dosage for clients of the 2 Ginsengs may well vary between individuals as with the Co Q1 0, but often as long as the client takes a dosage of between 150 - 300 mg per day, at least initially, the benefits have been enormous.

I'm highlighting the importance of this as I have witnessed over so many years the heart - break this causes. l am now thinking of including gentle questions on my consultation sheets for clients, as when I have been ''brave'' enough to broach the subject of the person's sexual relationships the person has been grateful for the opportunity to talk about this with someone they trust who is not going to judge them.

Quantum K Healing

Terry and I attended the Quantum K healing event on 23/6/09 in Solihull and it was powerful beyond measure. The whole evening was a rare experience of feeling immense love and light changing and refining our energy systems subtly and profoundly.

We have both been using Andy Kemp's Quantum K manual - ''Returning us to our original blue print'' for about 4 years. It has been an amazing transformational tool for personal growth and has helped us and our clients enormously.

Last august Andy made this available to the world free of charge as a Free healing experience on the net. You simply type in Quantum K and the free healing experience comes up straight away. The music and text is beautifully done and lasts only 24 mins. You simply read the text and listen to the music and it covers :physical, Emotional and Spiritual healing.

We were fortunate enough to get permission from Andy to show it to 22 participants at ''Our Space Clearing for the Soul'' workshop last September at Heaven Scent Bliss. One of the participants is highly clairvoyant and told us that whilst we were watching the healing experience we were releasing lots of dark strands and cords and at the end of watching it all of our auras and chakra points were brighter and clearer. It was an amazing work shop and one that we will remember for ever.

We should all get out and enjoy the natural world, a walk in the woods is good for mind and body

Many of today's pharmaceuticals are derived from trees. Aspirin comes from willow bark; yews are the source of Taxol, used in the treatment of some cancers; ginkgo biloba improves circulation; tea tree oil is beneficial for skin infections; cinchona tree bark contains quinine, the basis of many anti-malarial drugs; and Pycnogenol, which protects against deep vein thrombosis, is made from pine tree bark.

'When I surround myself with trees, my breathing becomes deeper, my senses are sati¬ated. I feel peaceful and grounded.' - The Japanese have a word for this feeling - shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. In 2004, Japan's National Land Afforestation Promotion Organisation conducted an experiment and discovered that a forest stroll had ben¬eficial effects on blood pressure, heart rate and the im¬mune system. They also found that people who just looked at a forest view for 20 minutes had a 13 per cent lower concentration of the stress hormone cortisol.

Reflexology & Massage Helps to Boost Circulation, Improve Lymphatic Drainage and Aids Relaxation

According to traditional Chinese medicine, the whole of the body is represented on the soles and tops of the feet. Therefore, a reflexologist massaging the feet can massage the entire body.

Massage helps to boost circulation, improve lymphatic drainage and aids relaxation. This same complementary therapy can be carried out on the hands.

Annie Day, aged 54, the owner of Heaven Scent Bliss in Grange Crescent, Penkridge, uses the hands instead of the feet for reflexology when her client has diabetes and has a lack of sensation in his or her feet, if they are ticklish or simply don't like having their feet touched.

"It's a smaller area but it is just as potent as a healing tool, and in Chinese medicine they often use it as much in reflexology as the feet," she says. "You get the same benefits. It's just there are more teachers and more colleges and institutes who teach reflexology on the foot and don't look at hand reflexology. You can do reflexology on the hands, head and ears."

The state of your hands can give a trained reflexologist an insight into your emotional and physical wellbeing before they perform the therapy, as Annie explains: "The heart is under the ring finger on the left hand, which traditionally is where you put the wedding ring. So if there's hard skin you could say that's from cleaning or hard work but sometimes there's been a big trauma or emotional issues, like a divorce, and it's the body's way of protecting the heart.

"Things like a fungal infection are usually metaphysical issues, like finding it difficult to move on from a difficult relationship, to leave a job you don't want to be in or finding it difficult to move forward."

Annie shows her clients how hand reflexology can be used every day to aid them: "Look at your hand palm up. There's a flap of skin between your thumb and finger and if you massage this with gentle, circular movements, with a carrier oil or just dry, this can help reduce constipation and increase healthy bowel movements. If you look at the tips of your fingers, they correspond to your scalp. So where the first knuckle is, below the finger plate, that's where your sinuses are. I get a lot of people with headaches with sinusitis so I tell them to massage their hands morning or evening.”

He is well experienced in his art, and has a great skill in simplifying structures so that they are easily understandable.
